The Batooro, Basongora, Banyampaka and Banyankore people are among those that live in the lake’s vicinity.The word “akatunguru,” which means “onion,” is used by all of these various ethnic groups. 

They speak dialects that are linked to one another and are collectively referred to as Runyakitara language. 

As a result of the lake’s onion like shape, Katunguru became the name for it.
